Maurício Klabin - Eclipse Lamp (1980)

Maurício Klabin - Eclipse Lamp (1980) - awarded and sold at MoMA in NY.

Designer, photographer, and mechanical engineer Mauricio Klabin designed the piece in 1982 using simple materials in order to make original design more accessible.
A long sheet of polypropylene, coiled in a spiral and supported by steel arches, gives shape to the ingenious Eclipse lamp. Small discs at its base allow it to assume multiple positions and inclinations, just as its dome can open or close, modifying the orientation of the light.
The simplicity of the materials aligns with its creator's ideal that design needs to be accessible: "With the Eclipse lamp, I overcame the trauma of expensive design." Maurício Klabin (1952-2000) was a designer, photographer, mechanical engineer, and had an avant-garde vision.
Eclipse possesses the ingenuity of those seemingly simple yet complex objects. Its design is timeless. It was delivered disassembled in a flat box. Its concept remains relevant today.
Since 2006, the lamp has been part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA).
