Jean Lurçat Tapestry
JEAN LURÇAT (FRANCE, 1892 1966) FANFARE (PICNIC). BEAUTIFUL TAPESTRY SHOWING PICNIC COMPOSITION WITH LOBSTER, TWO GLASSES OF WINE AND GUITAR. WITH LINING ON THE BACK TO BE HANGED. SIGNED BY THE ARTIST. DEC. 1950. 196 X 1121 cm
NOTE: In 1946, the exhibition "The French tapestry from the Middle Ages to the present day" brought together eighty modern works. Lurçat wants to popularize the art of tapestry. He advocates a larger, faster stitch and a reduced number of stains. Thus, he rescues techniques from the Middle Ages - without prints and with a simplified style - while remaining deliberately modern. In 1962, the first Tapestry Biennial took place in Lausanne. In 1966, Lurçat's great work of 347 m2, Le Chant du monde (The Corner of the World), marks its time.
